Tall case brass dial clock, ca. 1742-1787.

Walnut tall-case clock. The hood has a molded broken-scroll pediment terminating in carved roundels with three short wooden urn finials, a molded arch above the door, turned three-quarter columns at the front corners and a glazed door with an astragal top. Waist with cove molding at the top, fluted quarter columns at the front corners and a case door with an astragal top. Base with cove and ovolo moldings at the top. Base section with fluted quarter-columns at the front-corners, an applied base panel and supported on bracket feet. The case bears the label of William Savery of Philadelphia. Composite brass dial with applied chapter ring with roman hour numerals and arabic minute numerals, applied cast decoration in the spandrels and lunette, and a name boss. Inside the chapter ring there is an applied seconds dial and a calendar aperture. The dial is signed by Isaac Rogers of London. Eight day movement.

William Savery was possibly apprenticed to Solomon Fussell of Philadelphia between 1735 to 1741. He advertised regularly in Philadelphia papers between 1750 and 1772 and was probably working until his death in 1787. It is not known whether he himself carved the items he constructed.
